S1 E12 My First Ultra-Distance Cycling Race - Zara Bellos

Zara is a keen cycle-tourer, lover of wild-swimming, and passionate about conservation of woodlands. After winning the Ultra Distance Scholarship in 2022, Zara embarked on a journey training for her first endurance cycling race which also happens to be one of the toughest races in the UK called GBDuro. I chat to Zara about how she went from being a commuter in London, to taking part in one of the toughest races in the UK, as well as her dreams of cycling around the world.

Zara’s top tips

  1. Sign up for something and have that as a goal to prepare for. If you have a friend, sign up with them, and if not, sign up on your own. It’s easier to work towards a goal when you have committed to taking part in an event.

  2. Find a community within cycling. Instagram is a good place to start. Follow people who are inspiring and don’t be afraid to ask people questions or ask for help through these communities.

  3. If you’re going to maintain one thing on your bike, make it your chain! Wipe it down and lubricate it regularly as it affects how the rest of your drivetrain performs.
